π OpenAI launches GPT-4.5, its largest and most compute-intensive AI model to date
Internally codenamed "Orion," GPT-4.5 promises improved understanding of user prompts and is initially available only to ChatGPT Pro subscribers at $200 per month.
The model is being released as a "research preview," highlighting its experimental nature while requiring significant computational resources.
This launch follows Sam Altman's recent statement about OpenAI facing GPU shortages, explaining the premium pricing and phased rollout strategy.
π₯οΈ OpenAI faces GPU shortage, forcing staggered rollout of new GPT-4.5 model
CEO Sam Altman announced that OpenAI is "out of GPUs" and needs "tens of thousands" more before additional ChatGPT users can access the new "giant" and "expensive" GPT-4.5 model.
The rollout strategy prioritizes ChatGPT Pro subscribers starting Thursday, with ChatGPT Plus customers gaining access next week after additional GPUs are added.
GPT-4.5 comes with significantly higher costs: $75 per million tokens input (30x GPT-4o's cost) and $150 per million tokens output (15x GPT-4o's cost), reflecting the model's enormous size.
π Microsoft urges Trump administration to revise "overly complex" Biden-era AI chip export restrictions.
Brad Smith criticized rules limiting exports to 150 "tier two" countries, arguing they "go beyond what's needed" and may drive allies toward Chinese alternatives.
Regulations cap nations' imports to 50,000 Nvidia Hopper AI chips through 2027 (100,000 with US agreement) and limit data centers to 7% of companies' total compute capacity.
Smith warns of "unintended consequences" that discourage American technology exports, potentially becoming "a gift to China's rapidly expanding AI sector."
π¬ Meta is developing a standalone mobile app for its AI chatbot to compete with ChatGPT and Google Gemini
The dedicated Meta AI app could launch as early as Q2 2025, expanding beyond its current integration in WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger platforms.
Meta believes a standalone app will make its AI assistant more accessible to users who aren't active on its social media platforms, following a similar approach to Elon Musk's xAI with Grok.
Recently announced "Memory" features will allow Meta AI to remember details from conversations and access certain information from users' social profiles to provide personalized responses and recommendations.
π Meta dismisses approximately 20 employees for leaking confidential company information
According to The Verge, Meta has terminated around 20 staff members following an internal investigation into leaks of sensitive data, including all-hands meeting discussions with CEO Mark Zuckerberg and upcoming product plans.
CTO Andrew Bosworth confirmed the company is actively tracking down individuals who shared confidential information, stating they're "making progress in catching the perpetrators."
The crackdown comes amid reported declining employee morale following Zuckerberg's announced "radical overhaul" of content moderation approaches and the elimination of DEI (diversity, equality, inclusion) programs.
π New Pew Research study reveals 80% of Americans don't use AI at work, with widespread hesitation about its benefits
Only 6% of workers believe AI will create more job opportunities long-term, while 52% report feeling "worried" about AI's workplace future compared to just 29% feeling "excited."
Income levels correlate with AI attitudes: lower and middle-income workers are more pessimistic about AI's impact on job opportunities, while upper-income workers believe it won't significantly affect their prospects.
Despite 31% of non-AI users acknowledging that portions of their work could be done with AI, training remains scarceβonly 24% of workers have received any AI-related training, contributing to workplace anxiety about the technology.
